  • ABOUT THE PROJECT

    BACKGROUND

I interned with For Our Future Fund in the Wisconsin branch to help create social media posts for election season. This involved creating posts for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.

    MY WORK

Within the first week, I began work on social media posts in Canva and created both post text and graphics. I used the company’s brand colors and logos, making sure to adhere to size and style guidelines. I also edited TikToks in Premiere Pro before uploading them to TikTok. The posts featured here were posted on FOF - WI’s official social media.

My Creation Journey

Knowing the platforms.

When I began working at FOF WI, I was initially assigned to work on image posts made on Canva to be posted on their social media platforms. I was one of the first interns to begin working on social media posts that were to be posted on FOF WI's official social media platforms.

My social media supervisors taught me everything I needed to know about what to report on in Wisconsin, and had me research post ideas to send to them for approval. Before thinking of post ideas, I researched more about Wisconsin's news and who their audience was to properly cater the posts to them. Though FOF WI used several different social media platforms for image posts, they posted the same images and mostly altered the copy text. Once the post ideas were approved, I would get to work on making the posts.

Social Media Post Creation

To create the social media posts, I first needed to open Canva and wireframe the design of the post. I wrote down the post text on a separate document. Then, I would create blank boxes on the Canva project for text to be placed in. I would make sure to reference and use FOF WI's official brand guides for each post I made. I also made sure to match the theme of the week - for example, during Thanksgiving season, they wanted posts to be Thanksgiving themed. Once the posts were fully designed with the official logo at the top of the post and a disclaimer centered at the bottom, I would send the post and post copy text to my supervisor for approval. Once approved, I would add the post to a Google Docs document shared by others in the organization so they could be reviewed and approved by national representatives of FOF WI. From there, the posts would be handled by social media managers.

Appealing to a younger generation.

When creating TikToks for FOF WI, the research process was similar, but the creation process was different due to the video format of TikToks.

Before thinking of post ideas, I researched more about Wisconsin's news and who FOF WI's audience was on TikTok to properly cater to them. Oncemy ideas were sent to my supervisors and approved, I would get to work on making the TikToks.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Creating TikToks was a new territory for me - I had never created one before despite having used the app. However, I was determined to find out what a news organization like FOF WI would post. I researched similar company's TikToks, and after understanding how they presented content, I got to work on making my ideas a reality.

My first TikTok idea that was approved was of a debate clip of candidates for Senator in Wisconsin. Since it was making headlines that one of the candidates had fumbled a line, I decided my first TikTok would be about this. I put captions on the clip and used emojis to make the clip more personable, and added humorous music to set the tone of the TikTok. The TikTok ended up performing well with over 120K views, the most they had ever gotten on their TikTok.

That's all, folks!

When my internship was over, I had gained experience that I will take with me for the rest of my career. I am incredibly thankful to my supervisors for providing me with helpful feedback and encouraging me to do my best. I recieved an excellent testimonial from my main supervisor, Aislinn Bauer.

“Esther joined For Our Future Wisconsin in the height of campaign season and seamlessly fit into our team. Right away, I found Esther to be very quick to learn new skills and take on tasks effortlessly. Her creations lead to big impacts on our organization. She made a TikTok reaching over 100K views and graphics for social media that performed tremendously well, leading to upticks in our followers. Esther was someone I could count on to get her work done without reminders or follow up, I was never worried that she would fall behind or forget about a project. This skill is vital for our success during busy campaigns. Our digital interns work on an independent schedule to allow them to set their own hours and work when they need to. Even with this freedom she was always responsive to communications and ready to present her work when it was due. Esther would be an incredible addition to any team and I would gladly have her back on mine in a heartbeat.”
