  • ABOUT THE PROJECT

    BACKGROUND

Every year, the UH Digital Media program hosts DigiFest, a career fair that allows students the opportunity to speak with employers. I wanted to have a way to directly engage with employers when they came to my portfolio, so I decided to create an AR filter for my business card.

    MY WORK

Based on my existing personal branding and business card, I created an AR filter that could show employers what I am capable of in Spark AR and also give them a memorable interaction with my portfolio, as it plays at the top of the card.

My Creation Journey

Knowing the audience

While this filter was being made for myself, it was also intended to make a positive impression and increase engagement with employers at Digifest, a career fair to allow students to showcase their portfolio. I wanted to give them a creative way to access my contact information (for accessibility, the contact info is printed on the back of the card as well). I also wanted them to be able to see my portfolio before they visit my website.

Creating the art before the interaction.

Before working on the actual filter, I needed to create the assets. I did this in Adobe Illustrator, where I created the buttons that the user of the filter would tap to see the website previews.

After creating the buttons in Illustrator, I also wanted to include a graphic that represents myself, so I used existing assets I created for my website.

My portfolio in motion.

I wanted to have a way for employers to see my work in action, so I created a reel video to put on the top of my card. I used clips of myself working and of some of the different AR filters I've created. Then, I exported the video as jpeg images to import to Spark AR as an animation sequence.

Let's bring it to life!

With the assets created and the desired content of the business card confirmed, it was time to begin bringing the filter to life in Spark AR. To start off, I made a target tracker that would track the image of my business card. Then, I put the assets from illustrator in as planes. Lastly, I added a plane at the top of the card that hosted an animated image sequence of my reel video. I imported this as a texture and applied it to the plane. Now, it was time to create the interaction.

Patch Editor

In the patch editor, I created output patches for the buttons and attached the "object tap" patch. Next, I wanted to have the site previews disappear and reappear according to what button is pressed. I also wanted the contact info on the bottom to do the same. To do this, I used option switch and attached the object tap for each option to their respective option number. I then attached an object sender to the option switch and sent the options to the respective content (page preview and link text).

Drumroll, please...

With the filter completed, I tested it through my phone. It worked as intended, so I published it to Instagram and Facebook. I used it at Digifest and it was a huge success!
