    BACKGROUND

Designs Made EC ran a transmedia marketing campaign that promotes their custom watercolor photo edits to family-oriented individuals that enjoy shopping online on sales platforms like Etsy.

    MY WORK

This campaign ran for two weeks in the Spring of 2023 and be featured on social media platforms, Etsy, the Designs Made EC official website, a short video, AR filters, and a live-stream event. I acted as the producer of all content for this campaign over the span of the campaign planning and creation. While the required number of AR filters was one, I wanted to take my campaign a step further with two AR filters.

My Creation Journey

Who are we serving?

After researching my users and finding out what my target audience liked, I got to work strategizing what my augmented reality filter would be, as I originally planned to make only one. However, after my research, I found that my users were overwhelmingly interested in art and preferred dogs. I wanted to incorporate both of these things in the AR portion of my campaign, so I decided to make two filters.

Conceptualizing

To connect with my art-loving audience, I wanted to have both filters include interaction that made the user feel they were "painting" on their environment. Initially, I wanted the user to be able to "paint" on ther walls in their environment, but it seemed AR filters in Spark AR only really detected the floor. Due to this, I decided to switch to an approach that allowed users to make their own drawings in planar space. For the second AR filter, to include my pet-loving demographic, I included the company's pet mascot, Strawpuppy, as a 3D model on the user's head. I also included a screen tapping interaction that would allow paint splashes to appear on the screen.

Preparing for Spark AR

The 3D aspect of the planar drawing filter is made via a particle generator that is built in to Spark AR, so the only preparation needed was the particle textures. For the Strawpuppy filter, more preparation was needed for the screen overlay and the 3D model, as the texture for the 3D model needed to be adjusted to match Strawpuppy's character appearance.

Strawpuppy Filter - Asset Creation

For the Strawpuppy filter, a model was chosen from Sketchfab of a dog that closely resembled Strawpuppy's shape.

The texture was edited in photoshop to match the appearance of Strawpuppy. I edited the overall color to match Strawpuppy, and made changes to the face to reflect the style I designed Strawpuppy in. I also removed the collar and 3D model of the eyes so that I could draw on different eyes.

For the paint textures for all of the filters, they were created in Photoshop with free-to-use watercolor texture brushes in varying colors.

Let's bring the filters to life.

For the Spark AR portion of creating these filters, the planar painting filter was created via a particle generator in the program. The particles would be generated upon the user tapping and holding on the screen. The particle textures were created in the previous step in Photoshop, and the option to switch the texture was created with the Picker UI patch.

Strawpuppy Filter

For the Strawpuppy filter, I had the model of Strawpuppy have a head tracker and resized it to appear on the head. I added a head occluder to give the illusion of Strawpuppy being on the head. Then, I added an object tap in the patch editor so that when the user taps the screen and paint splashes appear and continually layer until it resets.

Drumroll, please...

The filters were utilized in the Monochrome Melon-choly transmedia campaign to increase audience engagement. Here are the analytic results.

Conclusion

While the filters didn't get enough uses for analytics, the campaign recieved positive feedback and a decent amount of engagement for a small company like Designs Made EC. The company was proud of the results and hopes to do more campaigns in the future.
