  • ABOUT THE PROJECT

    BACKGROUND

Creative Jam was an event in January 2023 that had students create a mobile app wireframe in Adobe XD and present it to Chevron and Adobe representatives. Teams had two hours and thirty minutes to create and submit their wireframes. The concept behind the app had to be related to helping users understand their carbon footprint.

    MY WORK

I was on a team of four students including myself. My team members were Breanna Chavez, Katherine Vu, and Ronaldo Rauda. We decided that since the event was hosted by Chevron, we would make an app related to them and their mission for sustainability. We worked together through Microsoft Teams and a Google Docs document. As we ran into some technical issues in running Adobe XD on some of our computers, I took the initiative to create the Google Docs document and wrote up concepts and copy for several pages. I also drew out the wireframes of some of the pages for my teammates to recreate in Adobe XD. In addition, I came up with possible problems and solutions to address any questions the Chevron and Adobe representatives might have. We were honored to present the app to an auditorium of representatives and our peers, and to recieve the Most Innovative App award.

My Creation Journey

Who is our audience?

For the beginning of Creative Jam 2023, we were presented to by Adobe and Chevron representatives. They educated us on how important it is to remind consumers about why sustainability is crucial in today's environment.

Conceptualizing

Once we dispersed from the presentation, my team and I introduced ourselves and began making concepts for the app. Since Chevron was one of the representatives at the event, we decided we would make an app catered to their company goal of a sustainable future. We communicated ideas in person and had Ronaldo write them down and send them on Microsoft Teams.

Our app’s expected group was individuals who would like to save money on gas as well as care about their carbon emissions. We believed our app met these needs by allowing users to receive a reward, which was a Chevron gas discount, for making green choices on the road. As the greener route often does not include tolls, the greener route also allows users to save money on tolls.

Time to create!

Once we dispersed to the computer lab, time was ticking. We knew we had only two hours and thirty minutes to finalize our concept and bring it to life in the form of a mobile app wireframe on Adobe Xd. To assist with writing and communication about the flow of different pages, I created a Google doc where my team and I could collaborate on ideas.

Collaboration Center

Due to our time constraints, our collaboration documentation was created at the same time as the UI. As we finished the content of each page, we would create it and design it at the same time.

It's time to design!

As a group, we decided on the different layouts of the pages and where the content would go. Based on some of the drawings I created in the Google Doc and layout/content ideas from Katherine, Ronaldo, and Breanna, we created the Adobe XD prototype of the Chevron EcoMaps mobile app.

The app has features that keep in mind how users can track and understand how their choice to take more eco-friendly routes during their commutes helps save the environment, and can help them save money through the app as well. A care for the environment and a financial incentive to take the eco-friendly route is what the app hopes to achieve.

Thanks to Ronaldo's input, we were able to have Chevron EcoMaps take into account how different car makes and models have different fuel emissions. Also, based on a rewards page from one of my own apps, I assisted in the page layout and content of the rewards page. Both Katherine and Breanna made decisions about page layout and content on different pages as well while also adhering to the branding Ronaldo had created.

Time to present!

Once time was up, our team knew we needed to be cohesive while we presented and understand what key points to talk about the app. Ronaldo and I traded off being the main presenters for the app with Katherine and Breanna handling slides and extra input about different aspects of the app. The presentation was successful - we got a few laughs for our on-the-fly jokes, too! We were overjoyed to learn that our team won the Most Innovative App award for our efforts.
